ITERA, Belarus consider joint power plant project

2004-02-05 Îïóáëèêîâàíî: Itar-Tass, Tokyo

The Russian oil and gas company ITERA is holding preliminary inquiries in cooperation with Belarussian energy specialists into the possibility of building one or several electric power plants in the country, the chief of ITERA’s administration board, Valery Otchertsov, who is in Tokyo on a visit has told Tass.
Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko late last year came up with the idea of building an electric power plant in Beloozersk, the Brest Region.
“There is the preliminary agreement a joint working group will be formed and feasibility studies carried out. The question is being considered of where the power plant or power plants will be built, of their likely capacity and of the likely markets where to sell electricity domestically or in Europe. If it turns out the project is economically effective and the sources of financing are found, the project will materialize.”
According to earlier reports the electric power plant may have a capacity of 450 megawatts. The project’s cost is estimated at 600 dollars.
Asked about the possibility of the company’s participation in building and upgrading petrochemical enterprises in Belarus, Otchertsov recalled that Itera was already participating alongside Belarus in developing the BELPAK enterprise – a producer of polyethyleneterephtalat.
“We have financed and commissioned a production facility costing 15 million dollars. This material is used for further processing at Russian industrial plants. We are considering the possibility of participation in some other chemical fibre production projects with the Belarussian industrial association Khimvolokno. The discussion is in the preliminary phase.”
