ITERA Oil and Gas Company has instituted a stipend named after Farman Salmanov, an outstanding geologist, hero of socialist labor, the winner of Lenin prize and Gubkin prize, Doctor of geological-mineralogical science, a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Russia. The stipend shall be awarded to the best student of the Geology and Geophysics of Oil and Gas Faculty of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after I.M. Gubkin. The Company has been cooperating with the Faculty and the University for many years. A decision to institute the stipend was made to in memory of Farman Kurbanovich Salmanov who passed away a year ago.
He was a legendary personality. He discovered Mamontovskoye, Megionskoye, Pravdinskoye, Ust-Balykskoye, Surgutskoye, Urenoyskoye fields… totally over 150 largest fields of hydrocarbons within 40 years of exploration work in West Siberia. They in fact made the basis of the national oil and gas complex.
F. Salmanov was awarded high state decorations for his outstanding achievements. He was an honorary citizen of Surgut (where he first came half a century ago as a head of the group of 16 young and enthusiastic geologists), the Khanty-Mansiyskiy and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Districts, and Surgut city, as well as the State of Texas (USA) and the Chinese city of Chin-chou.
Farman Kurbanovich Salmanov was an adviser to Chairman of the Board of ITERA Oil and Gas Company and head of the Board of Directors of Yugneftegaz (an ITERA affiliate) in recent years. He was actively involved in science research, in writing articles and in public service. Despite his busy schedule, he found time to meet students to share generously his tremendous knowledge and great experience of a trailblazer with them.
